    The Graduation

Things have changed since I sat in this library almost 6 years ago. The sitting area used to be different, there were fewer chairs in the hall, the lounge which used to be leisurely decorated with colorful furniture only a few years ago, was now filled with glass partitioned cubicles, and the north end, which had empty meeting rooms, now boasted of a new cafe with elegant round staircase on the side. Things change, some because we want them to, and some because we need them to. But the books, well, I can't say for sure, but I feel most of them, looked exactly the same to me.

There is a town in Alaska where everyone lives in one big building. We went there a year ago. You drive through the mountains, rivers, melting glaciers, and then a tunnel that was built for a rail to carry gold from the inner parts of Alaska to the town. It's on the sea and has been used as a port since the gold rush.

    The cult of education

In 2007, as a sixteen-year-old, I left home to get coached for a college entrance exam. I am bravely presuming that most of you reading this article did the same. As an obedient teenager, I moved to a new city, lived with random strangers, enrolled in a high school, but most importantly, got into a coaching institute – a shiny false ceiling building with no power outages and way too many lights. The teachers didn’t have names, just abbreviations, first their subject (P, C or M), followed by the initial of the first and last name. (My chemistry teacher was named CCP, which seems like an appropriate name now). And in all their glory were regarded as the reincarnations of gods. Well, not all of them; they had their ranks like the army.
